Brigid Cohen

Brigid Cohen is Assistant Professor of Music at New York University. She is a historical musicologist specializing in migration and diaspora studies, 20th-century modernisms, media and archive theory, and postcolonial studies, a.o. Her book Stefan Wolpe and the Avant-Garde Diaspora (2012) won the Lewis Lockwood Award from the American Musicological Society. She is currently writing Musical Migration and Imperial New York, which explores questions of displacement and citizenship through a study of New York concert avant-gardes, jazz, electronic music, and performance art in the 1950s and 1960s. Support for her research has been provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities, Wellesley College, the American Academy in Berlin, and the Max Planck Institute for History of Science.
