For the last time on November 2, 2022, Alphabet Readings invite to the Haus der Kulturen der Welt to gather around literary texts.

For the live audio play Manuel or A Hint of Evil, artist Hanne Lippard and author Heike Geißler will read a piece by artist and composer Armin Lorenz Gerold and lend their voice to excerpts of dreams from Charlotte Beradt’s The Third Reich of Dreams.

In a live performance in the HKW auditorium, the authors and musicians of the audio series Bad Words test a different way of speaking about language and literature.

Program

7 pm

Manuel or A Hint of Evil
Live Audio Play
By Armin Lorenz Gerold, with Hanne Lippard and Heike Geißler
In English

The story of Manuel unfolds around the thoughts blending into an inner monologue of an unnamed observer, as he regularly visits the Olympic swimming pool in West Berlin in the summer of 2020. It is the story of a failed flirt, of urban bodies travelling across the city for a brief summer escape that is told in this live audio play. It is the story of their sounds mixing in the hallway, showering, murmuring on the meadows, of their arms and legs slashing the water, forming rhythmic patterns that echo through Nazi architecture. With Hanne Lippard and the voice of Heike Geißler, who will read from Charlotte Beradt’s The Third Reich of Dreams.

7.30 pm

Bad Words
Live Performance
An audio series by Fabian Saul in cooperation with Mathias Zeiske
In German and English

“To live by night is to live by ear, and the eye will follow.”
– Etel Adnan

Based on various works, the audio series Bad Words creates a place for a different way of speaking about language and literature, for approaching a new sense of language. From talks, readings, voice messages, field recordings and music, a walk-in space of multiple voices is created. On this evening, it will be HKW’s auditorium where all contributing writers, artists and musicians of the series will come together for a live performance. The idea is: We start from one text so that another one can begin.

With Sophia Eisenhut, Joshua Groß, Lama El Khatib, Hanne Lippard, Enis Maci, Thuy-Han Nguyen-Chi, Wouter Rentema, Tanasgol Sabbagh, Fabian Saul, Miriam Stoney, Senthuran Varatharajah, Haytham El Wardany and Uljana Wolf

Alphabet Readings is a series of unconventional gatherings about diverse literary topics and works. The series probes various genres, forms and writing styles for their particular ways of making the world readable.
