Who decides?

Which conflicts „deserve” the attention of a supposedly hyperinformed, globalized public and which ones do not? What form does reflection on the media-political significance of wars take?

Carroll Bogert is Deputy Executive Director for External Relations at Human Rights Watch. She previously spent over a decade with Newsweek as a Southeast Asia correspondent, bureau chief in Moscow and editor and international correspondent in the magazine’s New York office.

Klaus Reinhardt is a retired general of the German Bundeswehr. He was commander of the NATO Joint Headquarters and the KFOR peace force in Kosovo. He is a critic of the war in Afghanistan.

Jon Lee Anderson is an American author and journalist. He began his reporting career in Latin America in 1979 and has since reported from over forty conflicts around the world. Since 1998, he has been a staff writer with The New Yorker, reporting from Syria, Libya, Iraq, Lebanon, Afghanistan, Somalia, Liberia, Angola and numerous other countries. His latest book is The Fall of Baghdad (2004).
