Overcoming Dictatorship
How Tunisia and Egypt are dealing with the past
Over the past few months, the “forum zenith e.V.”, in conjunction with journalists and lawyers in Egypt and Tunisia and with the support of the “Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen” (“Institute for Foreign relations”), carried out research to help document and analyze the dictatorships there. The results of this research will be presented from 5.30 pm, and from 7.30 pm, Deutschlandfunk will broadcast a live panel discussion, moderated by Thilo Kößler, entitled "Zur Diskussion".
Two years after the beginning of the Arab Spring that led to the ousting of Mubarak and Ben Ali, both societies are still wrestling with the legacy of dictatorship. Many are demanding a full investigation into the methods of the police state, surveillance by the intelligence services and other human rights abuses. Others would prefer to let sleeping dogs lie. What models have been developed by other post-revolutionary states around the world? Do Tunisia and Egypt need a special agency to process secret police files along the same lines as the one in Germany? What conditions must be created for this to happen? Or should the respective societies develop their own system?
The panel comprises: Herta Däubler-Gmelin, Roland Jahn, guests from Egypt and Tunisia and representatives of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, among others.
