Lazy Climbers Workshop

This workshop is a smooth learning curve to climbing trees for anyone. Teachers: Katja Echterbecker, acrobat, and Pia Lindman, artist.
The works of the Finnish artist Pia Lindman open up unusual perspectives. In the tradition of minimal performance and social sculpture, Lindman combines artistic, social and scientific research into a lively and variable art requiring the participation of the viewer.

Lazy Climbers workshop teaches you rather than fight gravity, have your body make use of it and find a balance with the tree you are climbing. Artist Pia Lindman and acrobat Katja Echterbecker have located suitable trees around Haus der Kulturen der Welt and developed safe and easy ways to climb them, quite like the sloth: slowly, with contemplation – and lazily. As lazy climbers, we explore trees as living bodies with which to connect through gravity and our own bodies. This brings our bodies to the edges of other dimensions, experiences, and perceptions: what does the world look like upside down, while hanging off of a tree branch?

The workshops are intended for such adults who usually do not climb trees, but we accept advanced climbers (such as acrobats and children) should there be room.

Pia Lindman was born in 1965 in Espoo, Finland. Her works have appeared in numerous exhibitions, including MoMA and PS 1 in New York, and in Mexico, Finland and Britain. Since her stay at the Künstlerhaus Bethanien in 2008/2009, she has divided her time between Berlin and Finland.
