Today, Moscow is a major world city and, with over ten million inhabitants, one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world. Here we find not only a collection of extreme transformations, from Tsarist Autocracy to Socialism to Perestroika; Moscow is also a political and economic power centre and, at the same time, a centre for cultural discourse. No city is so full of contradictions: history and modernity, rich and poor, nationalism and multiculturalism.
