Reflections for pupils: When Water Decides Life and Death
Assaf Gavron's "Hydromania"
The year 2067: Water has become an extremely precious commodity. The worldwide supply is controlled by forces in China, Japan and the Ukraine and the survival of people around the world has become dependent on their artificially grown rainforests. Under China's influence the balance of power in the Near East has shifted and Israel has become an enclave. When once again the rains fail to fall, the Israeli Maya, who has been left to support herself after the mysterious disappearance of her husband, has had enough and begins to rebel against the superpower water corporations. After an introductory reading, the author, guest of the programme section “Literatures of the World,” will discuss various aspects of the novel with young adult participants.
