Nikolai Gogol followed the publication of "The Government Inspector" by publishing a theatrical interpretation of it. The government officials in the provincial town are not people, but rather the passions of our souls, and the city is the city of our souls. Protests followed immediately: "Leave the officials alone," wrote one actor. "No, I will not let them go! Not as long as I live! They are real people among whom I grew up and grew old." Alfred Schnittke gave the officials asylum in his music.
