Tadeusz Borowski (1922 Ukraine - 1951 Poland)

The narratives in "Here in Our Auschwitz" don't know a way out. Because no one in Auschwitz taught us to give up hope, "we died in the gas", he writes. But we, those of us base our understanding on learning and history, will not have that understanding reaffirmed by Borowski. We believe we are standing on solid ground, but his stories open our eyes and show us that we are standing in the middle of a roiling river, not knowing the first thing about how to swim.
