Tango Crash (Argentina)

Electrotango Meets Bandoneón

It’s not easy to escape Astor Piazzolla's long shadow. The group around the duo of Daniel Almada + Martin Iannaccone have been jamming together for the last 20 years and have taken post-Nuevo Tango to a new level: an electrified tango with live improvisation mixed with electronic music. Almada can use the broad spectrum between live-electronica and compositions for dance and video. The connection to modern jazz is just as strong an influence on him as it is for the multi-instrumentalist Iannaccone. Their album “Bailá Querida” - with added strings and spoken word passages – didn’t win only the "German Record Critics Award, even the Guardian was more than enthusiastic: "A band like no other on the planet ... one of the best albums 2008!"

Chango Spasiuk (Argentina)

Dervish with accordion

Spasiuk hails from Apóstoles in Northeast Argentina, home to Chamamé, a style of folk music with a vigorous 6/8 beat. In the rain forest of Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil, the style blends elements from polkas and the mazurkas of Eastern European immigrants with Spanish and Native American music. Chango Spasiuk is for the Chamamé with its barn dance past, what Piazzolla was for tango. The New York Times writes: "He refreshes country dance pieces with chamber music arrangements, exuberant violins and delicate accordion voices.” The BBC says: "Chango is the epitome of a musician, who must be seen live to fully appreciate his intensity!"
