Zanga, driven from his village as an illegitimate child, returns home after many years. He wants to find out who his father is. But when he arrives something happens, which the villagers interpret as an angry reaction on the part of the river spirit, Faro. Conflicts erupt, revealing, in all their severity, the hierarchical mechanisms of a male-dominated society that is hostile to women and children.
