From 1 to 6 July 2008, the RENCONTRES INTERNATIONALES PARIS/BERLIN/MADRID will provide space for reflecting upon the new cinema and contemporary art. Over two hundred works from the areas of film, video and multimedia are waiting to be discovered for six whole days at the House of World Cultures. More than 96 per cent of the works presented are international premieres.

Around one hundred artists from over seventy countries will be showing their works in person in Berlin. Their number includes Pedro Costa (France Culture Award Cannes 2002, Selection Cannes 2006). The RENCONTRES INTERNATIONALES endeavour to show lesser known artists as well as film-makers with international reputations.

New art forms

The festival-makers have selected works crafted at the interface between contemporary art and new cinema that highlight the common features and the differences between the two artistic languages. Transcending the boundary between the genres, these works are new art forms. The RENCONTRES INTERNATIONALES have made it their task to examine these forms and make them accessible for discussion. They aim to stimulate reflection upon our visual culture and to present a programme that is open and challenging.

Video installations and multimedia concerts will accompany the film projects shown at the festival in the House of World Cultures. Discussion rounds and panels will provide forums for exchanges between artists, curators and visitors.

Paris/Berlin/Madrid

The RENCONTRES INTERNATIONALES are being held in Paris, Madrid and Berlin. They present a platform, unique within Europe, where artists can meet and enter into exchanges with a wide audience. In Paris, the RENCONTRES INTERNATIONALES will be staged at the Centre Pompidou, the Palais de Tokyo and the Jeu de Paume; in Madrid they will be presented at Reina Sofia (Spain’s national museum) and the Filmoteca Madrid.

LES RENCONTRES INTERNATIONALES is held under the patronage of Klaus Wowereit, Mayor of Berlin and authorised representative of the Federal Republic of Germany for German-French cultural co-operation. ARTE is the media partner for this edition of RENCONTRES INTERNATIONALES.
