A noise-performance with light and sound: Shawn Greenlee developed the computerised Augur System which turns the act of drawing into a performance. Graphic patterns are transformed into digital sound, movements become notes. For IN TRANSIT, Shawn Greenlee created a new work by using Augur as a ‘prepared instrument’ in much the same way that John Cage used his ‘prepared piano’. The performance itself is an act of improvisation, each one stands by itself, yet remains a distinct part of Augur as a whole. Shawn Greenlee’s infectious sound currents and the physical intensity of his show have made him one of the highlights of festivals such as the International Computer Music Conference in Barcelona and the Boston Cyberarts Festival in 2005. His artistic approach: ‘Startle, control sounds, enter into extreme physical states, intervene, unravel digital audiomaterial.’
