Kurosawa’s first masterpiece: a policeman searches for a weapon that was stolen from him and endeavours to solve the murder connected with it. The film is set in post-war Japan; the differences between good and evil are blurred – until the climax: after the showdown, the opponents lie next to one another – indistinguishable – in the dirt.
