Organisms Democracy: Constitutional Court
Expanding the political community
In German and English

Who owns the city? Who decides what happens there? How can non-human beings become part of the political community? Established in 2019 on a vacant building lot in Berlin’s Osloer Strasse 107/108, the Organisms Democracy initiated by Club Real finds fundamentally new answers to these questions. All the creatures that live there have the same political rights – whether squirrels, chestnut trees, or root-knot nematodes. In the Parliament of Organisms, human representatives fight for the concerns of the non-human organisms they represent and together make decisions that are implemented on the Day of the Garden Executive. In the Constitutional Court the 2021 governance period is critically examined. Visitors to the court hearing will decide on two lawsuits brought by citizen species of the site in Berlin-Mitte. Experts will shed light on the question of political representation from different perspectives: How do political institutions need to evolve to address the current situation of ecological crisis, to involve more people and also to take more account of the interests of future generations?
