Jens Friebe

Jens Friebe is a man with a guitar who doesn’t make man-with-guitar music. Recently, on his eponymous album, he shouted “Fuck Penetration” at the world and the words still reverberate. Whether classic rock or disco and boogie numbers, the writer and journalist uses his songs as a basis for negotiating socio-political issues and questioning the status quo. Friebe’s music takes aim at the present in order to open up prospects for the future.

Ozan Ata Canani

Ata Canani was a teenager when he wrote what was probably the most notable song ever about the situation of Turkish “guest” workers. Deutsche Freunde (German Friends) was a biting and buoyant critique of conditions in West Germany. Decades later, Ozan (“poet”) took up the electrified saz again and released his belated debut album Warte, mein Land, warte (Wait, My Country, Wait) on the 60th anniversary of the so-called recruitment agreements between West Germany and Turkey. His admonition is clear: Now it’s time to listen!
