Enslavement, Isolation, Sexual Abuse and the Brain: A Discussion about Harriet Jacobs
On her way from enslavement to freedom, Harriet Jacobs (1813-1897) hid in an attic for seven years. She described her experiences, the abuse she suffered and her escape in the autobiography Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl. In his artistic projects, the composer and performer Anthony R. Green attempts to make Jacobs’s story tangible. He composes music and generates images, movements and sounds in collaboration with academics and psychoanalysts. In a conversation with psychologist Ilya Veer, he presents his research on the life of Harriet Jacobs and discusses trauma, the brain and how people can survive extreme physical and mental stress.
