Femi Kuti & The Positive Force
The saxophone virtuoso Femi Kuti bears the legacy of his father Fela Kuti – inventor of Afrobeat and Nigerian national hero – in his name. After starting out in his band Egypt 80 as a 15-year-old, Femi’s solo career began in 1986 with the founding of The Positive Force. Since then he and his band have steadily expanded the vocabulary of Afrobeat and modified it with elements of punk and hip-hop. Fela’s dictum of music as a political messenger and tool in the fight for freedom and justice remains the leading force to this day. The New Africa Shrine, a club in Lagos with which Femi memorializes his father, remains the center of the international Afrobeat movement and collaborative source of Femi’s music. His new album One People, One World was released in 2018.
