The punks among the reissue labels, Sublime Frequencies are a collective of lovers of the obscure. Rooted in DIY culture, the US label gathers sounds beyond well-known musical maps that escape the conventional channels of ethnographic research, the music industry and the media. Both criticized and celebrated for their undogmatic approach, their output ranges from 1960s Thai surf rock to a radio recording collage from Java, Myanmar and Niger to the first internationally available recordings of today’s world famous Syrian wedding singer Omar Souleyman.
For its festival night, the label presents two bands: Hayvanlar Alemi from Ankara play psychedelic folk rock; their rhythmic sources spread across the globe. Baba Commandant updates Afrobeat with his Mandingo band. He plays the Malian Ngoni hunter lute and is involved in the underground scene of Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso as an activist for the preservation of Mandingo culture. Label founder Alan Bishop plays his favorite Indonesian singles in one of his rare and legendary DJ sets – with Orkes Melayu and Orkes Gambus, Pop Sunda, Pop Minang, Keroncong, Qasidah Modern and more.
