What music does Islam permit? Wael Koudaih addresses issues of identity, war experiences, and the field of tension between religion and creative praxis, not only in his Hiphop lyrics under his pseudonym Rayess Bek, but also in various forms of artistic research. Why does a religion, whose prayers are also melodic, prohibit music? As this question is not easy to answer, Koudaih posed it to various experts, playing music to scholars from different schools of Islam. In his lecture-performance he presents the reactions and suggestions for change of his discussion partners: How would they modify the musical examples in order to bring them into line with their respective interpretation of the holy texts?
