Naná Vasconcelos is synonymous with a percussion extravaganza. The US magazine Down Beat has declared him the world’s best percussionist no fewer than nine times. The balance between consciousness of tradition and musical openness is what makes Vasconcelos, a specialist in the Capoeira instrument, the Berimbau, so interesting for an audience of millions – and for other musicians. The list of his musical summits is long: Milton Nascimento and B.B. King, David Byrne’s Talking Heads, Pat Metheny and violinist Jean Luc Ponty, Don Cherri and Colin Walcott. Now he has a new summit meeting in Berlin.
