Mangue-Beat

In the subcultural swamps of old Recife in northeastern Brazil, DJ Dolores cultivates the Brazilian sound of tomorrow, called the Mangue Beat (Swamp Beat). Traditional Rabeca fiddles, the central instruments of the Samba forerunner Maracatú, sail through heavy beats; over them float the voices of old Embolada singers. When DJ Dolores plays live with Aparelhagem, then village folklore, tropical rock, and electro-beats fuse and centuries-old songs become lean, mean 21st-century music.
