Annabelle Amoros goes to Woolstock, an isolated village in Iowa, in the heart of the United States. Nothing happens. We wait for something that we ignore and that escapes us. Jan Ijäs films two industrial wastelands of the city of New York, at State Island and at Hart Island. One is a public dump that is currently closed down, formerly the largest in the world; the other, still in use, is a cemetery for unidentified corpses. In the American West, in Colorado, Jeanne Liotta brings to date the quotation by Alexis de Tocqueville, when he speaks of the fondness of Americans for private property. Laurence Bonvin and Stéphane Degoutin film the effects of the crisis on Las Vegas. Stella Ahn pictures Los Angeles as a monster city that devours its children. The only way to exist is to oppress or be oppressed. In Nevada, Mariah Garnett films a couple in the landscape of Pyramid Lake, in the Indian reserve of the Paiutes, and in the Black Rock desert. Their dialogue consists of snippets of spam compiled by the artist. Stephen Connolly is inspired by a visit to Zabriskie Point, in the Death Valley, California. He reimagines the epic film of Antonioni, re-appropriating his intention to “film an idea in landscape”.
