DEEP NORTH

The polar ice caps are melting. Sea levels are rising. Desertification is spreading. Natural catastrophes and the politics of climate change are on the rise. But the real question is not primarily how these developments are to be averted. With the festival theme DEEP NORTH, transmediale.09 looks beyond these catastrophic scenarios to the changes that are required in global culture. Are we, 20 years after the historic fall of the Berlin Wall, now confronting a new historic transformation? And what will the structural changes in the relationship between nature, culture and technology actually look like? These are the questions that form the focus of the conference, exhibition and video and film programme at the transmediale.09. Eight works have been nominated for the transmediale Award 2009, which will be announced in conjunction with the Vilém Flusser Theory Award in a ceremony on 31 January.
