1989 - 2009 The Haus der Kulturen and the World
Twenty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the bipolar order, the Haus der Kulturen der Welt is celebrating its twentieth anniversary.
In September with the program The Spirit of the Haus the focus of attention is on the Haus itself. Artists and friends of the Haus der Kulturen der Welt will design events in September and probe the relationship of the House to the city, history, to the participants, and the events of its inaugural year.
The interdisciplinary program 1989 – Global Histories was kick off of the anniversary year in February. The Haus considers history within a global context; it makes the simultaneity of worldwide events tangible, and traces those currents beyond national boundaries into the present day.
In June, the international symposium Beyond Multiculturalism: Taking a Closer Look at Concepts for Immigrant Societies summed up a conversation that the Haus der Kulturen der Welt has been involved in since its inception. The debate around immigration in Germany is being advanced with international input motivating it; our goal is to lay the groundwork for future coexistence within social change and provide fields for future political action.
The program 1989 to 2009: THE HOUSE OF CULTURES AND THE WORLD is sponsored by the Capital Cultural Fund and the Foreign Office.
