Anthropocene Curriculum Courses

since November 2021

The Anthropocene Curriculum Courses offer curated pathways through existing material and newly commissioned research on the Anthropocene. Using a collectively produced, multi-pathway approach, the Courses explore modes of learning in the Anthropocene shaped by and responsive to its ongoing transformations.

On Curricula

How do contexts shape the form and value of knowledge? On Curricula asks what it means to develop a curriculum in and for the Anthropocene. Pathways explore “planetary intimacy”, translating Anthropocene discourse and practices of rest and refusal amid the “Anthropocene hurry.”
Course 1

Archiving

Archives unfold narratives that help us understand the present. This Course explores practices of archiving in the Anthropocene, from the “death” of the archive and building networks of solidarity, to the challenge archivists face in dealing with ever shifting narratives.
Course 2

Consensus Building

The global environmental crisis calls for increased worldwide cooperation. But how can individuals with distinct concerns respond in a coordinated way? This Course sheds light on processes of consensus building in the realms of science, anthropology, artistic practice and activism.
Course 3

Communicating

What are the limitations and change-making possibilities of communication in the Anthropocene? Acknowledging the fallacies and shaky ground of communication in this current epoch, this Course explores new standards and practices that work with its instability.
Course 4

Sensing

What strategies can be used to make the Anthropocene legible, and therefore something that can be responded to? This Course aims to explore sensing and modalities of perception that reveal what has become abstracted, what is absent, what has been diminished and what has been lost.
Course 5

Accountability

The word “Anthropocene” has been criticized for the way that it casts humans as one homogenous group, masking the fact that accountability for today’s environmental crises is not evenly distributed. This Course asks: How can we hold institutions and ideologies to account in a way that ensures a fairer future?
Course 6

Throughlines

Which legacies – material, geological, biological and social – have come to form the Anthropocene? This Course explores what the legacy of the Anthropocene will be. What lines or connections can be traced through the entangled web of agencies and interactions that characterize the Anthropocene?
Course 7

Habitability

This Course considers the notion of habitability through various prisms – geochemical, biological, political and social conditions. What might “habitability” look like if the emphasis were on shared wellbeing, as opposed to just survival?
Course 8

Repair

The notion of “repair” assumes that it is possible to return something that is broken to its previous state. But the complexities of the Anthropocene often foreclose the possibility of such a simple form of repair. This Course explores how previous ecosystems, habitats or social frameworks must instead be reconfigured to respond to transformed contexts.
