How might we envision the Totentanz at the beginning of the 21st century? The presence of seven intensely grotesque rag-dolls, inspired by traditional Dance of Death iconography, resonates with a disembodied voice chanting the story of the dolls in an imaginary, disarticulate language. Simultaneously marionette theater and teratological theater; tableau vivant and tableau mort; shadow theater and theater of shades. A child's worst nightmares encounter an adult's most dreadful premonitions.

Michel Nedjar is undisputedly one of the most important artists of the French "Art Brut" movement; his art is unconventional, self-taught, and stands outside the mainstream art market. Allen S.
