Open House 2008

Education Programme

A programme for people of all ages, for Berliners from different countries of origin and different social backgrounds: art labs, guided tours and the activities in the Forum.

The art labs: Berliner Gates to Asia, the Water Academy and WORLDTRONICS Workshops
In the art labs, visitors meet artists and work on joint projects. Together with the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, artists prepare creative educational programmes. Following the hunt for clues at New York / Berlin 2007 under the heading city impressions, this spring we are staging: Berlin Gates to Asia, followed by the Water Academy for young visitors in the summer.

Guided tours, new: guided tours on Sundays
The repertoire of our education programme includes guided tours of exhibitions with commentaries by artists and curators, guided tours for pupils and visitors to Berlin, Sunday family visits combining exhibitions and playful creative activities. Beyond that, we offer our visitors glimpses behind the scenes, with guided tours to view the building’s architecture, and impressions of the latest exhibitions.

The activities in the Forum
For almost a year now, the Choir of the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, directed by Barbara Morgenstern, has been rehearsing its repertoire of music between pop and avant-garde. Its last major test was the joint performance with Harmonia at WORLDTRONICS 2007. An Open House is now being staged for radio artists too.

New: school partnerships
Since 1996, the Haus der Kulturen der Welt has been offering a special school programme with guided tours of exhibitions, public rehearsals, and workshops with musicians and fine artists. In addition to the public programmes, we are now entering intensive partnerships with individual schools in Berlin. The first such partnership was with the Carl-Kraemer primary school in Wedding. It featured joint activities with artists and teachers at the school and at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, advance training programmes for teachers and conceptual support for art teachers working on projects. This co-operation scheme was sponsored by the PWC-Stiftung within the framework of the Zoom / 10 Patenschaften programme. On 27 April, the co-operation agreement with the Bettina von Arnim Grammar School and the Jugendkunstschule Atrium was signed. More schools will be joining us in the months to come.

An open house for radio artists, too
In January 2008, the Haus der Kulturen der Welt started co-operating with KLUBRADIO, which sponsors a variety of radio-art projects. KLUBRADIO has a new production location: the former post-office at the listed Congress Hall – now the House of World Cultures. The house’s educational programme has been involved in regular tours with radio projects since 2004.

The programme conception was commissioned by the Haus der Kulturen der Welt and organised by the agency Next Interkulturelle Projekte
