Four works intervene at our art venue - the House of World Cultures. In their commissioned works, Nelson Leirner, Carla Guagliardi, Lucia Koch and the group of artists Chelpa Ferro combine contemporary art with the cultural diversity of Brazil.
Even though they belong to different generations, they are all pursuing remarkable careers, with works at major biennales and exhibitions. In this exhibition, they complement one another in the way they present their different poetic strategies. Nelson Leirner's works and the junk sculptures by Chelpa Ferro combine high and everyday culture, the holy and the profane. They set free energy in a manner so typical of a culture that has constantly had to deal with impoverishment and various forms of resistance. Lucia Koch's installations and Carla Guagliadi's works emphasise the necessity of simplicity, ease and beauty as elements in creatively living out everyday life to the full. "The joy in experimenting," says curator Luiz Camillo Osorio, "is the fate of a culture that has continually had to rediscover itself from the very start."
