Sigrid Weigel

Sigrid Weigel is a literary and cultural scholar and the former director of the Zentrum für Literatur- und Kulturforschung (Berlin). She works on intellectual history (Heine, Freud, Warburg, Benjamin, Scholem, Arendt, Bachmann, S. Taubes) and on the history of knowledge with a focus on heritage and genealogy, martyrdom and testimony, neuro-psychoanalysis, memory, compassion and empathy, facial expressions and the face. Her publications include Walter Benjamin. Die Kreatur, das Heilige, die Bilder (2008), Märtyrer-Porträts (2007), Grammatologie der Bilder (2015) and Das Gesicht (2017). In English she published, amongst others, Body and Image Space - Re-Reading Walter Benjamin (1996) and co-edited the essay collections Testimony/Bearing Witness. Epistemology, Ethics, History and Culture (2017) as well as Empathy: Epistemic Problems and Cultural-Historical Perspectives (2017).
