Gary Tomlinson
Gary Tomlinson is John Hay Whitney Professor of Music and Humanities at Yale University, where he directs the Whitney Humanities Center. His books A Million Years of Music: The Emergence of Human Modernity (2015) and Culture and the Course of Human Evolution (2018), uncover deep patterns and processes in the evolutionary interaction of culture and biology; they merge biologists' “niche construction” theory with systematic analyses of Paleolithic cultures and a transspecies semiotics indebted to Charles Sanders Peirce. Other publications explore opera, the music of Claudio Monteverdi, musical thought in Renaissance magic and the place of song in the first meetings of Europeans with indigenous peoples of the New World.
