Maaza Mengiste

Maaza Mengiste is a novelist, essayist, and photographer. Her latest novel, The Shadow King (2019), was shortlisted for the 2020 Booker Prize. Her debut novel, Beneath the Lion’s Gaze (2010), was selected by the Guardian as one of the 10 best contemporary African books. Her fellowships include a Guggenheim Fellowship and currently a DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Fellowship. Her work can be found in the Guardian, The New York Times and BBC, among other places.
