With Gal Costa, the Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW) brings another legend of the Brazilian music scene to its stage on July 13. Other dates of the concert series: Martinho da Vila on June 2 and Gilberto Gil on July 5.

Looking back and dancing forward: Martinho da Vila’s samba career began over fifty years ago and encompasses many albums. The latest is called Mistura homogênea, contains collaborations by the pioneer of Brazilian music and relates to the political and cultural present of his country. With his companion Noca da Portela, da Vila intones Vidas negras importam (“Black Lives Matter”); for Era de aquarius, he shares the microphone with up-and-coming artist and rapper Djonga.

At the concert at HKW – the only stop in Germany on his European tour – da Vila will share the stage with his musical family: Wanderson Martins (cavaco), Claudio Jorge (guitar), Kiko Horta (keyboards), Ivan Machado (bass) and Paulinho Black (drums). They will be joined by his daughter Analimar (vocals) and grandson Guido Ventapane (percussion). Together they’ll present new songs and dance with the audience to old hits like Casa de bamba, Canta canta, Minha gente and Disritmia.

With her new album As Várias Pontas de Uma Estrela, Gal Costa celebrates over half a century in music with songs from across her career: The Tropicália star sings new arrangements of her many hits, while also covering classics from the great Brazilian songbook, including songs by Chico Buarque, Caetano Veloso, Dorival Caymmi and Tom Jobim, as well as the works of Milton Nascimento.
