"Divine Invention" by Elia Suleiman
Elia Suleiman
France/Germany/Marocco/Palestine 2002,
92 Min., German subtitles

"Divine Intervention" comes into play in a perfectly normal town in the Middle East where the neighbors make each other's life miserable. Their relationship toward the Israelis is even more hopeless: Suleiman plays a man from Jerusalem who has to meet his girlfriend from Ramallah at the checkpoint outside the city. Here they observe the banal harassment and the madness of an absurd border. Suleiman plays the frustrated lover with a stoical expression reminiscent of Buster Keaton, while many scenes seem inspired by the French comedian Jacques Tati. For this film, the very first Palestinian contribution to the Cannes Film Festival, Suleiman won the "Prix du Jury".
