How can one intervene in canon narratives? How can one change art history and art institutions by reading canon narratives against the grain?
Lara Khaldi (researcher and curator, Jerusalem) reflects on the paradoxes of exhibiting histories of oppression and renegade objects in contemporary museums in Palestine; departing from the crisis of autonomy of art, Ticio Escobar (curator and essayist, director of the Centro de Artes Visuales / Museo del Barro, Asunción) rethinks the role of the contemporary museum by incorporating alternative forms to the Western hegemonic canon; David Teh (researcher, curator, and writer, National University of Singapore) examines art’s role in the framing and de-framing of a nation in postcolonial geographies; Diedrich Diederichsen (art theorist and cultural scientist, publicist, Akademie der bildenden Künste, Vienna/Berlin) speaks on Hubert Fichte and his relation to canonical and counter-canonical journeys by German artists: from Italy via Spain and Portugal to countries of the Global South.
