Ordinary people with their favourite object portrayed in the streets of Dar es Salaam. Touching and disarming pictures framed in the renowned old fashioned (17th century Dutch) Delft Blue tiles. Late 1998 young Amsterdam photographer/filmmaker Barend Schweigman taught photography at a local institution in the Tanzanian capital. A clash of cultures became inevitable. However step by step friends introduced him into the African culture; he managed to portray people in his neighbourhood. The differences disappeared, the longings turned out to be universal. The exhibition shows 14 lightblue coloured images of youngsters, men and women who state their desire in one sentence framed in a Delft Blue tile. The exhibition is in three language versions: English, Swahili and Dutch. Meanwhile Barend Schweigman is staying in Dar es Salaam. The virtual exhibition will be online from 23th of December 1999 onward. I hope you are able to pay attention to this original exhibition. Pictures are available. In case you wish to make a link, feel free to do. We appreciate you to inform us. Dar es Salaam in Delft Blue is the first picture exhibition and the 7th exhibition in the series African artistst living in Holland / artists inspired by Africa.
