Roughly two years I am (we are) busy to realize this series. Originally it was meant to pay special attention to African artists living in Holland and to assist them in obtaining publicity. Because strangely enough the small number of specialized galleries on African art mainly deal with "traditional" art or deal with artists living in Africa and forgetting about those living in Holland. Most of the important (Dutch) modern art musea are in fact european / north american geared msuea. Thus they limit modern art in a Eurocentric manner to two continents and excluding African ( and Asian and Latinamerican) art. I am glad you liked Arms into Art http://www.africaserver.nl/nucleo. It took me one year to realize this virtual exhibition. Due to llogistical anf d financial reasons. Also I had hoped to have the virtual exhibition being produced and made in Maputo/Mozambique. However that turned out too complicated and costly for the time being. For a while I was slightly concerned people might find the exhibition too politically correct. Which would be an unfair judgement despite the political background and the fact the artists re-use landmines, limpetmines, kalashnikovs etc. Their work is very strong and shows the resilience of a people. The quality of the sculptures is outstanding. Again to promote the group of artists we wrote a cv plus picture of all 14 participating artists and a story about the association of artists itself. Thus we hope to facilitate their entry in Europe and elsewhere. It might be interesting for you to know that 2 Mozambican artists connectec to the Nucleo de Arte are at present in Amsterdam. regards Fons Geerlings http://www.africaserver.nl Stichting Africaserver Kleine Houtstraat 3A 1013 HN Amsterdam / Nederland tel 020-626 0772; fax 020-624 0471
