For the time being one quick word of thanks to Juan for reminding me of duende. As you know, I think, I live in Tokyo. My 'live' links with the Spanish cultures are limited to this list. I had forgotten duende, and Lorca for that matter. A nice gift for today. (btw though, I agree with Dianne that 'oriental' and 'asian' are out-of-date, Eurocentric terms -particularly oriental. This is a language problem, though, and I admit I do not really know the accepted usage of Spanish, Hispanic, Latin, etc. We must teach and assist one another with these things.) And to Dianne (and Juan) - yes, I agree there is a danger of seeming to pontificate. That is certainly what happens when you simply regurgitate fixed opinions. But isn't it also a risk you take when you try to delve into things a little deeper than you are confident you can safely reach, and try to find something new? For myself, I admit I enjoy intellectualising, within the meagre limits of my brainpower. But I am also very aware that unfortunately sometimes - often even - in the struggle to find a useful path the conversation can appear pompous, and also can become self-serving and spiral in on itself. As long as we always remain open to the possibility (probablility?) that our opinions are wrong, and that the conversation is only a means of advancing rather than any kind of creed or manifesto, then I'm not sure that it matters very much. By the way, Dianne, you very kindly credit me with quotes that are not mine (at least I don't think they are :-))- there is a lot of heavy traffic on this list, it's difficult to keep track. But I would second them, and your addition - your 'faith or hope' are perhaps what I meant by the 'in-your-gut thing'. I'm not really sure there _is_ any true understanding anywhere - especially regarding this slippery thing we call 'art'. Perhaps we can only 'do', and then 'do' some more - all the while attempting to keep our eyes open to what we are not expecting to find, and struggling in the direction that appears to be leading towards satori. That is why I responded to Juan's mail. Struggle. After all, this kind of conversation is 'doing' too. :-) Tom --- Original Message --- From: Dianne d'Alpoim Guedes Date: Wed, 15 Dec 1999 15:36 Subject: [forum1] Re: Pre- Saint John/ Saint Bill ___________________ T o m V i n c e n t creative director ............IMG SRC, INC............. http://www.imgsrc.co.jp
