*** Haus der Kulturen der Welt: Forum1 Archive *** ----------------------------------------------------------------------- [Date]: Wed, 1 Dec 1999 11:02:36 -0800 [From]: Britta Erickson [To]: Cultural Exchange via Internet [Subject]: Chinese art taking off from "Sensation" In answer to Kim: If you look at the "Chinese Type Contemporary Art Online Magazine" (Only Western language publication devoted exclusively to contemporary Chinese art), you can see a few photos from the exhibition, "Post Sensation: Alien Bodies and Delusions." Here is the issue: http://www.chinese-art.com/volume2issue2/index.html Then go to the index bar on the right, and select Beijing exhibitions. That exhibition was publicized only by word of mouth, and it still had to close down almost immediately. The government does not condone such exhibitions, although often they will turn a blind eye, depending on their mood. The exhibition was literally underground--in an old tunnel shelter. "Culture.Life" - a subsequent, similarly shocking, exhibition - was installed, but closed before anyone could see it. You can find it here: http://www.chinese-art.com/Contemporary/volume2issue5/beijing1.htm The animal pieces make me very angry. I have been told that the work with the body of an old man face to face with the body of a fetus was quite poignant. It reminds me of Billy Viola's video installation where he placed a monitor showing a video of his dying mother inches away from another monitor showing a video of his baby. The monitors faced each other, and the images reflected onto one another.
