*** Haus der Kulturen der Welt: Forum1 Archive *** ----------------------------------------------------------------------- [Date]: Mon, 15 Nov 1999 03:17:09 -0800 [From]: "fran ilich" [To]: "Cultural Exchange via Internet" [Subject]: Re: [forum1] Censorship hi, i agree with many of the comments expressed here. but i would include other kind of censorship, that is not exactly censorship, the marvelous art of exclusivity & exclusion, which i guess is one of the favourite practices in Mexico. there are many cultural cliques that mainly they belong to the mainstream bureucratic art. but one needs only go to some of the so called cultural institutes and cultural centers to find out that as usual, the real action is somewhere else. an example, when at laboratorios cinem=E1tik we were working to put together the 1st cyberculture festival in latin-america, we decided to go to some cultural centers in tijuana, some where run under federal, regional or local governments (and budgets). everyone wanted to have their cut in this event, show on glosy fliers their logo. but when the ptractical or economic necessities were discussed they would say that there is no personnel and budget and when we said "oh, then we're sorry. we thought we would work together on this". and when they noticed we were serious and we really didnt mind using other public venues like clubs, caf=E9s, alternative videolounges, or the like. in other words we would care for them, only if there was some kind of cooperation towards creating real work, not the usual power game, they would offer to give the magnanimous quantities of maybe 300 dollars. needless to say this is worst than censorship. this is serious. nos vemos en el futuro. ilich. http://cinematik.com
