I think the excellent moderation/summarization and the initial drives to recruit good participants and kick off discussions have helped fuel and direct the forum, and have kept it from falling into the disuse or low quality that plagues most e-discussions. Perhaps another recruitment drive or pr push could open it up further and solidify a steady stream of discussion. Here at the Asia Society, we have just launched AsiaSource (http://www.asiasource.org), a new online resource on Asia that has been consuming all of my time for the past 9 months (and keeping me a Forum lurker). Here's more info for those interested, and I welcome any suggestions on what other features we might offer. I am especially interested in setting up a network of correspondents to write histories and reports from the field on Asia's various contemporary arts scenes. Histories used to exist, I remember, on some site (The Gate Foundation?) but as far as I can tell they're gone (and probably outdated anyway). "AsiaSource has been developed by the Asia Society to meet the need for timely, reliable, unbiased information and assistance regarding the cultural, economic, social, historical, and political dimensions of Asia. Offerings on AsiaSource include: * A daily digest of Asia-related news (including 5-10 arts news stories and reviews each day) reported in the international press; visitors can subscribe to receive this every weekday by email * An international events calendar of events from the Asia Society and scores of other organizations. (Add your events now!) * An Asia bookstore with more than 1100 carefully selected titles across several subjects, with synopses, reviews, and bestseller lists. * Thousands of annotated links * Country profiles which include maps and statistical information * A database of specialists on Asia * A searchable glossary of more than a thousand terms" ---------------------------------------- Jon Lackman Producer, Arts & Culture, AsiaSource http://www.asiasource.org Asia Society 725 Park Avenue New York, NY 10021 fax: 212-744-8825 email: jonl@asiasoc.org http://www.asiasociety.org ---------------------------------------- The Asia Society is a nonprofit, nonpartisan educational institution dedicated to fostering understanding of Asia and communication between Americans and the peoples of Asia and the Pacific.
