Personally, it is a cop out. For me the fact that Rembrandt is dead is exactly that. It is a lot more honest to say "I do not understand Art, but I understand Art History" than to apply the test of time as an answer to evaluate quality. Quality unfortunately is not a democratic proposal. The finer the codification the harder it is to recognize it. It is a type of elistism, definitely different from racism or classism. It is a conversation for that person that knows the codes and the satisfaction of knowing how to read them. (There is a satisfaction of the apparent intellectualism which would be the one that would be applied for the apparent "art-mass" and the common places) It is very important to know why an artist becomes an artist and the definition of the poiesis. As Umberto Eco says "Art is about the study of the individual poetics". Unfortunately the individual poetics are dead if the artist is dead and to only know his left overs is a very poor experience "Es m‡s importante la Imaginaci—n que el conocimiento" Albert Einstein Juan JosŽ D’az Infante www.altamiracave.com jdiazinfante@altamiracave.com
