A political statement can affect only the art with which it is associated - not all art. But to set up a system that judges art based on politics - as in the USSR or Nazi Germany, certainly encourages the proliferation of "safe junk." In that sense, mixing politics with art produces bad art. Read Milan Kundera on those points if you need persuading. Gone with the Wind was to my mind a great movie but terrible politics. Nobody should base their political decisions on th political theses of the author concerning the Old South and slavery. So great art can be bad politics. A-
