If the City of N.Y. pays for something, then the City of N.Y. will meddle with it, unless there is a law that prevents such meddling. I have a friend who is in favor of stopping the "meddling" (a la Newt Gingrich - who knew exactly what he was doing). I think that the "meddling" is necessary - public support for the arts and culture has been going on since the days of Ur and it is the only way that civilization is maintained. The problem is to make sure that government supported art does not need to reflect government views. Ami
