[Subject]: The Humberto Nilo Case

Dear Members of the Forum:

I fully understand and support Hans Braumźller's insistence in
disseminating Humberto Nilo's testimony "Memoria" denouncing the blatant
corruption in the Universidad de Chile's administrative regime. Although
the Humberto Nilo Case has been widely reported in the Spanish speaking
art community, his powerful, articulate and detailed text describing the
events that lead to his 'extraction' from his teaching post deserves to
be translated or at least summarized in other languages: his testimonial
clearly describes the dominant and recurring conditions that are endemic
in all cultures and communities in this world.

Words like "democracy" or "corruption" have already received the
appropriate non-stick coating and made to be meaningless. We fail
understand the nature of "corruption" by neglecting to examine it at the
base of the power pyramid. As a result, we fail to learn why the members
of a peasant community in Perś or in Guatemala leave their fields in
protest and are suddenly labeled "terrorists", persecuted, jailed or
killed or driven to exile.

If the form of communication that we have chosen to use in this Forum
has any function, and if we realize that as artists -no matter how small
the space that our community occupies at the base of the pyramid is- we
can focus our attention on cases such as Humberto Nilo's, then we may be
able to start to articulate and realign the true power of our work and
our culture.

Estimados Miembros del Foro:

Absolutamente comprendo y apoyo que Hans Braumźller insista en diseminar
el testimonio de Humberto Nilo "Memoria" denunciando la descarada
corrupci—n del regimen administrativo de la Universidad de Chile. Si
bien el Caso de Humberto Nilo ha sido diseminado entre artistas de la
comunidad hispana, su detallado, expresivo y poderoso texto describiendo
los hechos que resultaron en su 'extracci—n' de su puesto acadŽmico
merece ser traducido o por lo menos resumido en otros lenguajes: su
testimonio describe claramente condiciones que dominan y se repiten y
que son endŽmicas en todas las culturas
y comunidades de este mundo.

Palabras como "democracia" y "corrupci—n" ya han sido propiamente
revestidas y neutralizadas hasta perder su significado. Fracasamos al
tratar de comprender la verdadera naturaleza de la "corrupci—n" cuando
nos negamos a examinarla en la base de la pir‡mide del poder. Como
resultado, fracasamos en comprender por quŽ una comunidad campesina en
Perś o en Guatemala abandona sus campos en protesta y sus miembros de
pronto son denominados "terroristas", perseguidos, encarcelados,
asesinados o empujados hacia el exilio. 

Si esta manera de comunicaci—n que usamos en este Foro posee alguna
funci—n, y si como artistas logr‡ramos comprender que -si bien
representamos una espacio muy peque–o en la base de la pir‡mide- casos
como el de Humberto Nilo merecen nuestra concentrada atenci—n, tal vez
entonces podamos comenzar a articular y realinear el verdadero poder de
nuestra obra y nuestra cultura.
