But as it's well known, Columbus and the people who went to the continent after him were not interested in learning to know the cultures they met but forcing them (in the most brutal way)into their own culture, the European. Yes and the native people from the americas were unknown in Europe. The catholic church have need more than 100 years that indigenous were not animals but human beings. Forcing them is a very poetic interpretation of genocide and colonialism. For the europeans may be the "Day of the Race" or the "Encounter".
