The curator can take on that role of guide/educator. Sometimes I forget that people are at all different stages of knowledge about the web and what makes a work web-specific. Another option is to ask those involved to discuss the technical/artistic aspects of their work in introductory paragraphs. Several times I've been asked to do this and find it is a pleasure. But what you are suggesting is excellent. Janet brought up an interesting issue, conservation. I assume archiving is also a part of this topic. I have many works off my site but sometimes new techniques/codes appear and suddenly I know I can improve a work. It's bothersome for the ezine, project site to continually update material. Thus I keep newer versions at my home site. But, you bring up some all but insolvable problems such as work that includes off-site links. I once linked gun and jellyfish sites; about half moved or disappeared after the first year! Because of that I seldom link off site (except for references).
