The aim of the ensemble “Anima”, all of whose members attended the St. Petersburg Rimski-Korsakov Conservatory, is to present choral music of the highest artistic quality, from Gregorian chants to jazz. For this evening they have put together a program of Russian Orthodox church music: fragments from the liturgy and the vigils of Sergei Rachmaninov and Piotr Tchaikovski as well as sacred works by Pavel Chesnokov.

The Schola Gregoriana Pragensis concentrates on interpretations of Gregorian chant, drawing on the oldest sources from the 10th century as well as newly discovered compositions from the 15th century which were brought to light by the ensemble’s study of medieval sources. The program includes chants for one and more voices: “The command of the melodic line, carried with great lightness and freedom,” wrote Le Monde de la Musique, “lends great originality to their interpretation.”

The concert will be held in the Passionskirche, Marheinekeplatz 1, Berlin-Kreuzberg
