| Critics refer to the work of the Mexican multimedia artist Rubén Ortiz Torres as Pop fronteriza. With opulent colours and ironic contrasts, he caricatures the American way of life on both sides of the border between Mexico and the USA. The Fronterilandia is the special field of the 38-year-old, who has lived in Los Angeles since 1990. Alongside his painting and his film and video work, since the early nineties he has become known for his photographic series: with motif sequences such as The Adoration of the Magi, American Monarchy and Cosmic Race he documents the commercialization and kitschification of the national emblems and insignia of Mexicanidad. Photographic works by Rubén Ortiz Torres can also be seen in the Brotfabrik from 29.9.-27.10.2002 In cooperation with the Centro de la Imagen and the gallery OMR Mexico City.
