Nortec stands for norteño-techno. For a fusion of high-tech and low-tech, of North and South. It stands for techno: breakbeats and soundpatterns – and it stands for the North of Mexico: city and countryside, cowboy hats and tasselled sleeves. But above all it stands for music and video performance, for DJs and VJs.

The music programme of MEXartes-berlin.de: Mexican Wave - Current Music from Mexico

The first overview of the full spectrum of current Mexican music production in Europe: from classical and new music to rock, world music and club sounds, a plethora of concerts introduces listeners to the musical cultures between Tijuana and Oaxaca, presenting the many-layered developments and connections between indigenous traditions, European modernity and American-influenced pop music as well as urban electronic club music.

Many groups have explicitly political agendas, confronting the rapidity of urbanization, the border situation between the USA and Latin America and the discontinuities within Mexican society - without detracting from the entertainment value of their music. Today the musicians and composers draw from the existing diversity, regional as well as historical: a brilliant eclecticism of sound.
